Strnad, an armourer, started a wagon repair and waste business. But he's not successful in everything

He practically built the largest armaments group Czechoslovak Group from scratch. He saved the bankrupt Tatra car company. Today they earn billions of crowns a year and export all over the world.

Jaroslav Strnad's name has long been associated only with success. In the last two years, however, there have been several setbacks. The well-known manufacturer of small trucks Avia failed to start up and one month ago one of Strnad's biggest missions yet - the rescue of the Ostrava-based Vítkovice Heavy Machniery (VHM) from the former group of billionaire Jan Světlík - ended in insolvency.

Strnad and another well-known businessman, Martin Ulčák, who succumbed to a serious illness last week, each acquired several companies from Světlik. But they had been working together for the last two years to save the smelters. The aim was to take the company through insolvency and get it back on its feet.
